In the hills of Rwanda, where traditions are passed from one generation to another, the story of the Tray basket begins in the hands of a skilled artisan. Early in the morning, natural fibers such as sisal, sweet grass, raffia, and banana fiber are carefully prepared and dyed with vibrant natural colors. Each strand is then slowly woven together using a traditional coiling technique.
With patience and precision, the artisan begins at the center of the basket. Gently guiding the fibers in a spiral, the basket slowly grows wider with every turn. Each movement of the hands reflects years of knowledge, culture, and dedication passed down through generations.
Each stitch carries a story—of heritage, resilience, and creativity. Traditionally, baskets like this were used in homes to serve food, store grains, or present gifts during gatherings. Families would gather around, sharing meals and conversations, while the woven bowl held both nourishment and meaning.
